Once you’ve found an amethyst geode, the real fun begins! Unlike other resources in Minecraft, amethyst requires a bit of patience and careful planning to farm effectively. To harvest amethyst, you’ll need to gather a few key items:
Pickaxe
Any pickaxe can be used to mine amethyst blocks, but I recommend using an iron or diamond pickaxe for faster mining. These higher-tier pickaxes will allow you to collect the maximum amount of amethyst shards from each block.
Torch or Glowstone
Amethyst geodes are pitch black inside, so make sure to bring some light sources with you. Torches or glowstone blocks will do the trick and help you navigate through the geode safely.
Cobblestone or Building Blocks
Since amethyst geodes can be quite maze-like, it’s a good idea to bring some cobblestone or other building blocks. This way, you can create paths, mark your way, or block off dangerous areas as you explore the geode.
Now that you’re fully equipped, it’s time to venture inside the amethyst geode. The geode consists of three distinct layers:
Outer Layer
The outer layer of the geode is made up of smooth basalt, which can be mined with any pickaxe. This layer doesn’t yield any amethyst resources, but it’s necessary to break through to reach the inner sections of the geode.
Calcite Layer
Beneath the smooth basalt, you’ll find a layer of calcite. This layer is not only visually appealing but also a sign that you’re getting closer to the amethyst. You can mine the calcite to reveal the amethyst crystals inside, but be careful not to break them just yet!
Amethyst Layer
Finally, you’ve reached the amethyst layer! Here, you’ll find clusters of amethyst blocks and budding amethyst. Amethyst blocks can be mined directly to obtain amethyst shards, which have several uses in the game, including crafting tinted glass and spyglasses. However, if you want to grow your own amethyst, you’ll need to handle the budding amethyst with care.
To successfully farm amethyst, you’ll need to wait for the budding amethyst to grow into fully-fledged amethyst clusters. This process takes time, even in Minecraft. The growth of budding amethyst is influenced by the presence of nearby blocks, particularly when they receive a random tick update. Placing blocks such as dirt, stone, or other materials around the budding amethyst can help accelerate their growth. Just make sure to avoid transparent blocks like glass or air, as they won’t contribute to the growth process.
Over time, the budding amethyst will convert into fully-grown amethyst clusters, ready for harvesting. You can use silk touch enchanted tools to mine these clusters and collect them as blocks. This way, you can recreate your own amethyst geodes and grow more amethyst whenever you want.
